This chapter reviews developments in improving the barrier, mechanical, and thermal qualities of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and explore their functionalization with metal nanoparticles to provide antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and oxygen scavenging properties. Additionally, a general overview of the basic knowledge concerning the biodegradation behavior of PHAs, and their nanocomposites is presented.
