Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are emerging biopolymers that have the potential to be a viable and sustainable alternative to conventional plastics. Many bacteria have been reported to produce PHAs from diverse feedstocks. However, issues like highly variable chemical composition and unstable, poor thermal and mechanical properties exist. In addition, the overall high costs of production, especially those incurred on feedstocks and downstream processing, make their commercialization a challenging proposal.
