When a beam is transmitted through atmospheric turbulence, its characteristics change. When the signal light and local-oscillator light are coherently mixed in a wireless-optical coherent heterodyne-detection system, it causes a mismatch of the mode and polarization state of the two types of light, thus reducing the coherence efficiency and seriously affecting the performance of the entire communication system.

When a beam is transmitted through atmospheric turbulence, its characteristics change.
