Model–data assimilation (MDA) includes model inversion and data assimilation. Data assimilation tries toimprove the performance of a model by either optimizing parameters or initial state variables according toa given data set (Peng et al. 2011). Model inversion can be used to estimate parameters that are related tothe measured quantity, by using observed properties to constrain physical or biological processes.
