Gaoyou, a water town with over 2000 years of urban history, is located at the southern end of the Yangtze River Delta and the Jianghuai Plain, within the region of Lixia River. Here, the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal run north and south, and the Grand Canal Bridge, the flood road in the lake area, and the Gaoyou and Zhuhu locks connect the east and west of the canal. On China’s map of 9.6 million square kilometers, Gaoyou is not a prominent name; in modern China’s soaring economy, in prosperous and developed Jiangsu, Gaoyou is far from as famous as the counties and cities in Southern Jiangsu. However, Gaoyou in history is indeed a place with a significant background.
