The idea of a sponge city was born just 10 years ago. The concept was an attempt to respond to the climatic anomalies of recent years. These included frequent flooding, on the one hand, but, at the same time, worsening water scarcity problems in increasingly large areas of various continents. One quite important element of the sponge city concept is the implementation of green roofs. They support the proper circulation of water in the environment and counteract the formation of an urban heat island. Today, there are two main green roof systems. Their division is due to the use of two different structural systems—different load-bearing capacity, as well as the use of different insulation layers and their sequence. The purpose of this article is to analyse the suitability of green roofs in two construction formulas—classic technology and inverted technology for the sponge city concept. Each of these construction types has a number of advantages and disadvantages. The results of the analysis are intended to answer the question of which technology and which type of roof (intensive or extensive—classic or inverted) contain better technical parameters and are more suitable for sponge city solutions.
