Landfill gas is a source of electricity. The potential for creating (de-centralized) energy systems using MSW landfill hills is a cause for optimism about the future of energy production. Electric island networks based on renewable energy sources may contain an electric generator based on landfill gas, energy storage and some renewables. The more diverse the energy source of renewables (e.g., solar and wind energy units), the lower the performance of the mentioned auxiliary units can be. This shift towards renewables offers hope for a future where we can significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. According to the results of a preliminary statistical analysis based on wind power and landfill gas utilisaton together, in the last few decades, about fifty modern MSW landfill hills were made in Hungary. Considering the 5, 10 or 15 km vicinity of these, 24%, 44% and 60% of the total population of Hungary are found here within the 16%, 37% and 53% of the villages and cities, so a large, de-centralized energy system consisting of energy hills could be made to cover about the 8 to 10% of the yearly electric energy need. The first results of wind velocity and solar radiation measurements are presented, as student research, on a landfill hill, which may serve as a basis for designing the energy hills together with increasing students’ environmental awareness. A truncated pyramid-shaped artificial hill (Pusztazámor, hill 1) with short grass cover was examined regarding wind velocity and solar radiation. Results showed some special, favourable meteorological features (influencing the type of the planned wind turbines and solar panels).
