Strategies for Effective Management of Construction and Demolition Waste in the Republic of North Macedonia

Construction and demolition waste (C&DW) refers to the solid waste generated from the construction of facilities/infrastructure as well as the maintenance and the demolition of the existing structures. C&DW is the largest waste stream, representing more than a third of all waste produced in the EU. Due to the high potential for re-use and recycling, C&DW has been identified as a priority waste stream. Proper management of C&DW should lead to an effective use of the natural resources and mitigation of the environmental impacts. The main objectives for efficient management of C&DW should include: management of C&DW in an environmentally sound way and using the full potential of C&DW to become circular in practice. The aim of this paper is to analyze and propose strategies and measures for effective C&DW management in the Republic of North Macedonia, and particularly in the high urbanized capital of the country. The research embraces a desktop study of the current C&DW management practices in EU and in the Republic of North Macedonia and propose short- and long-term measures and strategies.
