The Historical and Etymological Roots of Zhong as a Philosophical Idea
摘要
Similar to Western ontological metaphysics, where complex and nuanced concepts like “being” and “existence” are derived frequently used terms in natural language, Confucian’s philosophy’s central idea, “zhong中,” also has its roots in a widely used word. The character “zhong” is one of the few most often used Chinese words, whether in modern or ancient Chinese. It is a polysemous word with multiple parts of speech and has undergone a long history of evolution as a sophisticated philosophical concept in Confucianism.
