The biggest humanitarian crisis that humanity faces today is the triple-pronged planetary crisis of Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss and Pollution. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has provided evidence that exceeding the 1.5 degree Celsius target would mean irreversible and, catastrophic planetary damage putting all life at risk. An urgent need to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions by 45% till 2030, on a base year of 2010, was agreed upon by world leaders and climate experts in the Conference of Parties (COP), United Nation’s Climate Change Conventions held in the past few years. However, emissions have instead increased by 15% since 2010. 70% of GHG Emissions can be attributed to the Infrastructure sector. For a developing country like India, aspiring to be categorised as a ‘Developed nation’ by 2047, infrastructure development is non-negotiable—being a key enabler for economic growth. However, with mounting global pressure to reduce emissions, focusing on ‘Sustainable Infrastructure’ is the only path ahead. EcoCollab LLP, an infrastructure solution firm was set up in 2021 in Bangalore, to provide a ‘One Stop Platform for Green Buildings’. The objective of studying the case of EcoCollab is to throw light on how to address the business problem of providing sustainable infrastructure solutions despite consumer ignorance and in many cases, facing resistance while simultaneously keeping costs low. The case study will help start-ups gain insight into creating a ‘green’ microenterprise while attracting and retaining customers. It brings out important learnings on customer centricity, solutions and the role of leadership in creating a sustainable and relevant organisation.
