Network alignment offers a comprehensive approach to identifying analogous components within diverse molecular systems across species, drawing upon both topological features and functional annotations. This robust foundation enables systematic comparative studies in the realm of computational genetics. This review article primarily considers protein–protein interaction networks, providing an overview of representative network alignment algorithms from the past two decades and insights into contemporary aligners. We also introduce prevalent evaluation metrics from the scientific literature for assessing the performance of these methodologies. Future challenges and potential solutions for improving biological network alignment are discussed.
