The Vital Role of Additionality in Renewable Energy Generation for Sustainable Integration of Green Hydrogen—Systematic Literature Review

Green hydrogen production must be carefully considered alongside other critical uses of renewable energy. Diverting renewable energy from productive applications to hydrogen production without careful evaluation can hinder broader energy access and expansion. This study conducts a systematic literature review exploring the most recent scientific literature available capturing the essence on how integrating green hydrogen production affects global energy security, its sustainability and the renewable energy capacity installation rate. Green hydrogen currently produced is still very limited, but it bears great potential to lead a low-carbon energy economy. The advent of advanced technologies, international collaborative efforts, robust regulatory frameworks ensuring additionality and effective grid management that integrates additional renewable energy capacity with storage solutions using green hydrogen will drive the energy economy towards a sustainable future. The principle of additionality is vital for ensuring energy security and accessibility. Policy implications and collaborative efforts from industries are needed to enforce this. This research aims to bring awareness to industries and government to formulate robust strategies and policies that promote a low carbon and sustainable energy supply and consumption.
