The study region was located in the western Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh, in Kinnaur district. From 2001 to 2021, Himachal Pradesh lost 4.61 thousand hectares of tree cover, equivalent to a 0.35% decrease in tree cover. 40.1 (0.73%) thousand hectares of forest area were gained in Himachal Pradesh. The geographic information system (GIS) data analysis shows that 69.87 ha of forest were highly degraded due to hazards and other anthropogenic activities. 35.68 ha of forest cover were highly affected and degraded due to the incidence of forest fires. The objective of this short communication was to analyse the forest fire incidences by using the Terra Aqua MODIS and FSI data through the GIS application. From 2001 to 2021, Kinnaur lost 68 ha of tree cover, equivalent to a 0.25% decrease in tree cover since 2000 and 35.1 kt of CO2 emissions. The forest fire alerts were recorded from 2001 to 2020. A total of 223 incidences were recorded. The directional distribution standard deviation ellipse shows that the maximum incidence of forest fires occurred in the habitation surrounding the forest.
