Enhancement of NIR-Absorbing Ability of Bis(Diarylmethylium)-Type Dicationic Dyes Based on an Ortho-Substitution Strategy

Organic dyes such as cyanines (Hünig et al. in Chem. Eur. J. 5:1969–1973, 1999;Hünig et al. in Chem. Eur. J. 6:2618–2632, 2000;Shindy in Dyes Pigm. 145:505–513, 2017;), squaliums (Hu et al. in RSC Adv. 3:7667, 2013;Khopkar and Shankarling in Dyes Pigm. 170, 2019;), and diimmoniums (Han et al. in Adv. Mater. 32:1,905,096, 2020;Kim et al. in Dyes Pigm. 190, 2021;), and organometallic complexes such as phthalocyanines (Liu et al. in Dyes Pigm. 128:179–189, 2016), and dithiolenes (Kobayashi et al. in J. Am. Chem. Soc. 133:19,642–19,645, 2011) show a narrow energy gap which has been attributed to a long-range π-conjugation based on the effective delocalization of N/O-based cations and charge-transfer (CT) interactions based on metal ions, respectively.
