In Baghdad, recent years have witnessed significant and rapid changes in school trip patterns from non-motorized trips (active transport) to motorized trips due to economic, social, and safety factors. This change led to an increase in gaseous pollutants emitted into the local environment due to vehicle fuel combustion and exceeding the permissible limits, thus its harmful impact on the health of residents. This paper tried to study essential gaseous pollutants affecting the local environment caused by changing the school trip pattern. Two schools have been chosen in Baghdad to conduct a field study. At each school location, two tests were conducted one on a school day and one on the weekend. Measurement has been taken via portable devices (carbon monoxide meter, CO2 meter, SO2, NO2, and O3 meters). The results found that a high concentration of NO2, SO2, and CO2 gases exceeded the national criteria’s limits during the school day compared to the weekend, as it decreased to below those criteria. On the other hand, the concentrations of ozone gas O3 and carbon monoxide CO were within the permissible limits during the two tests. The air quality index (AQI) was also calculated at the two sites, which gave the same results as the previous ones. However, this indicator rose on the school day, indicating the impact of the change in the school trip pattern on the local environment compared to the weekend, which was within acceptable limits.
