The global increase in the construction of flexible pavements and rehabilitation of existing pavements require a huge amount of bitumen produced by crude oil refining. Bitumen industry is always looking for alternative materials that have the ability to improve the properties of asphalt whereas reducing their carbon footprint. Bio-bitumen utilization in the field of pavement engineering has been receiving serious attention due to its eco-friendliness, in comparison with petroleum-based asphalt binders. Bio-bitumen is produced by waste materials or from natural materials, significantly decreases carbon dioxide emission. It can improve low-temperature performance and is economical. The basic tests results indicate better performance of bio-bitumen compared to conventional bitumen due to improvement in the rheological properties of bio-bitumen. The partial replacement of conventional bitumen with bio-waste resulting in bio-bitumen shows improved Marshall properties in bituminous pavements. The Marshall stability value is increased by 10.68%. From the results obtained through Marshall stability indicates bio-bitumen performance is better than conventional bitumen.

摘要
