Teaching Practice: Analyzing and Transmitting the Wisdom of Climate-Adaptive Construction of Traditional Heritage Settlements
摘要
Climate change and increasingly prominent energy demands exert significant constraints to urban sustainable development. Energy consumption of buildings is determined by both individual buildings and urban morphology. Therefore, it is imperative to improve environmental quality through urban design. To support this, this study aims to report how the education shapes theoretical and practical components in design courses by the teaching practice of the environmental performance a heritage Ciqikou district in Chongqing, China. By analyzing the construction wisdom inherent in local climate adaptation, this study is expected to provide theoretical guidance for climate-responsive urban design practices. The teaching practice includes two parts: theory part and design part. The theory part consists of the interpretation of spatial characteristics and principles of multi-scale urban form adaptation to climate, and the analysis of research progress of relevant topics all over the world. In the design part, students were expected to analyze the wisdom of traditional settlements adapted to local climate at different scales, and explore the inheritance of the traditional settlements. Through environmental performance simulation and multi-objective optimization based on genetic algorithm, the students explored the spatial patterns and their combinations adapted to the regional wind and thermal environmental conditions, investigated the behavioral patterns of people adapting to the microclimate, and summarized the wisdom of building adapted to the local climate. Overall, the teaching practice is based on the combination of green design and cultural heritage, aiming to cultivate students’ ability to comprehensively use the relevant knowledge of meteorology, environmental science, and planning to analyze the climate adaptive characteristics of settlements and apply them to design. After the course, students are expected to initially master the characteristics of climate-adaptive urban form, responsive environmental performance assessment software, the application of climate-adaptive urban design theories and methods, and innovative solutions from different perspectives.
