The Importance of Green De-Stress Relief Spaces in Malaysian Airports: Enhancing Traveller Well-Being and Environmental Sustainability

Airports can be stressful environments for travellers with long queues and busy terminals. Studies show that exposure to green spaces positively impacts mental health and reduces stress. By relating the issue of stress in airports and the psychological benefits of green spaces, this study aims to establish the importance of providing leisure and green spaces in reducing stress levels among passengers and users towards improving the airport experience. Positive airport experiences enhance passenger satisfaction and reputation, leading to more return visits. Incorporating green de-stress relief spaces in Malaysian airports is crucial for traveller well-being and environmental sustainability. By integrating natural elements like indoor gardens, airports can offer a tranquil oasis for passengers seeking respite. These spaces align with Malaysia’s environmental initiatives, showcasing the importance of nature preservation. The study employs a qualitative approach using thematic analysis, systematic literature review and visual observation as the research methodology. The relationship between biophilic design and attention restorative theory supports the integration of green space programs in providing relaxation activities and stress management tools for travellers. Overall, green de-stress relief spaces in Malaysian airports are vital in enhancing traveller experiences and promoting a greener, sustainable future that aligns with several sustainable development goals.
