Design of a Bat-Inspired Flapping Robot

Bats have long fascinated scientists and engineers due to their remarkable flexibility and handling capacity, which closely correlates with their sophisticated wingbeat kinematics. Studies indicate that bats achieve exceptional aerodynamic performance by adjusting their wing flapping and morphing during the upstroke and downstroke phases. Inspired by this, we developed a bat-inspired flapping wing robot, featuring an innovative mechanism that synchronizes wing flapping with wing morphing. Additionally, we developed a control strategy to replicate the wingbeat kinematics of bats using a pair of highly stretched silicone-based membrane-morphing wings. We believe that this work yields a well-flying bionic platform for exploring bat flapping flight and paves the way for exciting advancements in aerial robotics.
