With the advancements in digital technology, the desideratum of instant connection has become a key component of daily communication. With the unceasing development of various ideas for social networking, diverse platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, SnapChat, and others have evolved with time on consumers’ demand. People are networking with people residing in remote areas of the world at the click of a mouse. However, this has brought us closer to the brim for cyber-attacks, data breaches, and unlicensed access to individual information. It is highly precarious to exchange sensitive or confidential matters over platforms where user privacy is not safeguarded. As a repercussion, there is a compelling challenge to develop applications where users’ confidentiality can be enforced and a sustainable environment can be achieved. This research article illustrates a chatting application based on an Ethereum smart contract and InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) for sharing sensitive and private data. The salient features of IPFS-based and Ethereum smart contract (ESC)-based are analyzed and tabulated. This article highlights the need for privacy while encouraging a green environment for sharing personal information.
