Efficiency Optimization of Photovoltaic Cells Using Maximum Power Point Tracking Method

In order to meet the electrical demands of near future needs and growing population, non-renewable energy sources (NRES) themselves are not sufficient, as limited availability of fossil fuels is deteriorating day by day. Also, use of NRES is not environment friendly, leading to environmental pollution. This also attributes to the greenhouse effect. So, harnessing energy for renewable energy resources is the need of the day. Among the many types of RES, the most and widely available resource is solar energy, received from sun. Harnessing energy from sun is possible with the use of photo voltaic cells. The efficiency optimization is one of the major challenges in photo voltaic conversion. So, in this paper, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) has been implemented to enhance the efficiency of solar energy conversion. The output of the photovoltaic cell is applied to a DC to DC converter that uses a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal to perform the switching operation based on the maximum power point of the solar cell. The simulation results show the fruitfulness of the topology.
