This paper examines the efficiency of the open trench (OT) in mitigating ground vibrations under horizontal excitation. The influence of various parameters, such as soil density, shear wave velocity, damping ratio, frequency of excitation, and Poisson’s ratio, on the active screening effectiveness of OT is thoroughly investigated. Results reveal that the density and Poisson’s ratio of the soil do not significantly affect the effectiveness of OT in mitigating ground vibrations. The effectiveness of OT increases as the excitation frequency increases, while the effectiveness of OT decreases with an increase in the damping ratio and shear wave velocity.
