Lightning Protection of Hospitals in the Coastal Region and Enhanced Earthing System – Case Study for West Coast Sri Lanka

This article presents the earthing improvement of the external lightning protection of a hospital in the coastal region. The isokeraunic level of the considered location is one major factor for the need of a Lightning Protection System (LPS). In addition, the behavior of the soil contaminants in coastal region uplifts the requirement of earthing enhancement to attain below 10Ω in compliance with the IEC 62305 – 2010 standard. The high values of the soil resistivity and the resistance of the existing earth rod have been a challenge for maintaining the recommended earthing resistance, which was overcome by earthing of the re-bars of the multi-story building (structural bonding). Another major problem faced by any structure in the coastal area is the corrosion of the earth wires. In order to avoid the rapid corrosion which may lead to discontinuation or the increase of the resistance value, anti-corrosive paint was proposed to minimize this effect. With proper designing and installation of the lightning protection system, the cumulative resistance of the ground electrode was measured to be 2.38 Ω, a value which well satisfied the requirements of the IEC standard. The case study of enhancing the earth resistance in the coastal areas is presented in this article.
