Improvement of the Lightning Protection of Distribution Lines by Using Composite Insulation Cross-Arms
摘要
With the development of the composite insulation cross-arm (CICA), power grid companies have realized that the application of CICA in transmission lines could reduce the land area and construction cost of the tower. In recent years, the application of CICA schemes on distribution lines has further developed, and it has been found that CICA schemes on distribution lines could create considerable potential as well. In this paper, the method recommended by IEEE standard was used to calculate the lightning flashes rate and the advantages of CICA schemes in lightning protection and construction cost was demonstrated. In China and Europe, using CICA scheme to replace the widely used metal cross-arm with pin insulators could significantly improve the lightning protection level of distribution lines. In North and Latin America, using CICA scheme to replace the fiberglass or wooden cross-arm with post insulators could significantly reduce the construction cost of distribution lines.
