In recent years, hybrid DC circuit breakers have achieved notable advancements in China, combining the benefits of high current capacity mechanical switches with the rapid switching of fully controllable power electronics. This article categorizes hybrid DC circuit breakers into natural and forced commutation types, discusses their recent developments, and outlines the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches. The article examines the breaking strategy of the 200kV hybrid DC circuit breaker used in the Zhoushan project, concluding that high-power electronic series connection and break insulation recovery technologies are key challenges in DC breaking, and discusses the progress in these areas. Finally, the article presents insights on hybrid DC circuit breaker research.
