This article presents the application of various monitoring instruments required for observing and analyzing the effect of surcharge on soft soil and the behavior of clayey soil under the load applied through embankment. This study of instrumentation and monitoring on embankments on soft clay is represented by using a case study. The case study is about a warehousing project in Mumbai, India, where the improvement of a 9.5 m thick soft clay layer was done using PVD and Surcharge. In this paper, we will focus on the details of instruments required for monitoring the settlement, porewater pressures, and shear strength of soil. The article focuses on instruments such as Piezometer, Settlement Gauges, and Vane Shear Apparatus. A total of 44 settlement gauges and 22 piezometers were installed and pre-post vane shear (70 Nos) was conducted in the project shown here as a case study. The paper discusses the application, functions, and outputs of the above-mentioned instruments, installed on embankments on soft clays.
