Effect of Surcharge During Curing on Cement Stabilised Cochin Marine Clay

Marine clays are generally characterized as highly compressible soil with very low shear strength. Therefore, many geotechnical problems arise during design and construction of various structures in these type of deposits. These deposits are easily affected by the changes in the stress system and the pore fluid. Use of cement stabilization technique for such problematic clays is not new. The silica and alumina present in clay soil will react with the calcium present in the cement to form calcium silicate hydrates or calcium aluminate hydrates. This reaction is time dependent and is similar to the reactions that occur when cement cures. When the cement treated soil is subjected to surcharge loads, this stabilization reaction may get affected. In this paper, the effect of surcharge loads on cement stabilized marine clay during different stages of curing has been studied. The long term effect of these surcharge loads on index properties and unconfined compressive strength were studied. The results indicate that the surcharge loads during curing have significant influence on the strength characteristics of cement stabilized marine clay. Application of surcharge loads significantly improved the unconfined compressive strength of cement treated samples. Lower surcharge loads at initial curing periods and higher surcharge at higher curing periods were found to be more effective.
