Stability and Sustainability Analysis of an Arbitrary Embankment on Soft Soil Stabilized with Stone Columns
摘要
The embankments built over soft clays with high compressibility and low shear strength, experience large settlements and instability problems. In case of thick soft clay layers, stone columns can be used to accelerate the consolidation under the embankment surcharge. This study intends to design and analyse ground improvement work stone columns for a given arbitrary embankment following the procedure outlined in IS code 15,284 [1] part 1. The design of embankment is based on bearing capacity, settlement and stability considerations. To improve the sustainability of the geotechnical project, life cycle analysis such as embodied energy emissions and carbon foot printing of stone columns should be studied. The results indicated that the stone column of 1 m diameter spaced on a square grid pattern of 1.5 m accelerates consolidation process under earth fill which will act as a preload. The stone column into soft soils strengthens parameters against settlement and increases the bearing capacity, stability and flexibility of the embankment. The total estimated embodied energy and embodied carbon for stone columns is 1782 GJ and 120 tonnes respectively which indicate a better environmental performance.
