Numerical Study on Free Field Vibrations Due to Pile Driving Activities

Owing to the increase in the high-rise buildings, the pile (deep) foundations are one of the important sub-structural components for such essential types of geotechnical systems. Due to the increase in the number of group piles in the congested urban areas, the ground vibrations have significant role to play on the service life. Hence, the permissible limits of the vibrations must be verified in the pre-construction stage. Pile driving operations can cause significant amount of noises and disturbances to the sensitive structures. The transmitted vibration will depend both on the source and the propagating medium. On the other hand, the acceptable level of vibration depends on the receiver characteristics. Existing buildings in which many sensitive processes are on-going such as hospitals and laboratories can easily be affected due to the ground vibrations. In this present study, an attempt has been made for investigate levels of vibrations due to the heavy pile driving operations. The present paper describes the numerical investigation of pile driving activities using two-dimensional finite element model in ABAQUS. The results show the free field vibrations tantamount to be significant. The results of the free-field study also showed the importance of mitigating pile driving activities. The sensitivity of the problem domain has been studied based on the different size of the domain, mesh size for the analysis. Numerical simulation has been corroborated with existing literature. The influence of the dimensions, impact load and soil characteristics have been examined to capture the vibration level.
