Remarks on Archaeological Technology and Scientific Archaeology

This article surveys the evolving role of science and technolog in archaeological research, emphasizing that while laboratory analyses and multidisciplinary techniques can greatly enrich interpretations of past human behavior, truly “scientific archaeology” depends equally on rigorous theoretical framewords and well-defined research problems. Charting the history of archaeology’s relationship with the natural sciences—from early reliance on stratigraphy and typology to more recent applications of rediocarbon dating, environmental archaeology, faunal studies, residue analysis, and DNA research—it highlights how each new method widens the scope of evidence yet requires coherent theoretical guidance to drive meaningful questions. Technological analyses, the autor argues, too often remain peripheral “appendices” if they are not integrated with problem-oriented investigations that place human behavior and social process at the forefront. True multidisciplinarity occurs when archaeologists and technical experts converge on shared research aims and collectively interpret data rather than treating science as a mere ausiliary. Finally, the article asserts that archaeology thrives when field strategies, analytical methods, and interpretative theories operate in concert, enabling scholars to reconstruct not just chronologies or artifact typologies but deeper insights into cultural change and human history.
