Development of Site-Specific Response Spectra for Two Heritage Sites in India

Assessing the seismic hazard potential of heritage sites is essential to ensure the seismic safety of monumental buildings for future earthquakes. In the work reported in this chapter, two typical heritage sites, viz Senate building site, University of Madras (site 1), and Forest Research Institute site, Dehradun (site 2), have been chosen and site-specific spectra are developed for 2475, 4975 and 9975 years mean return periods using International Building Code based procedure. For this purpose, geophysical investigations have been carried out at the heritage sites, and top 30 m shear wave velocities are measured through multi-channel analysis of surface wave (MASW) survey (2D) and site classifications are obtained. Site-specific response spectra developed for the identified sites are compared with IS 1893–2002 design spectra, and it is observed that, for site 1, IS 1893 design spectra is conservative for all the return periods considered, and for site 2, IS 1893–2002 design spectra is unconservative compared to site-specific spectra for 9975 years mean return period. Further, soil bore log data in and around site 1 and site 2 are collected. One-dimensional equivalent linear wave propagation analyses have been carried out with two recorded ground motions and respective site periods and amplifications of peak ground accelerations (PGA) are estimated. Zero period accelerations (zone factors) specified in IS 1893–2016 are conservative for site 1 and unconservative for site 2 for both design basis earthquake and maximum considered earthquake compared to PGA from probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for all the three return periods considered.
