Framework for Ground Motion Characterization

Strong ground motion parameters can exhibit different characteristics, with some focusing solely on motion amplitude, while others emphasize frequency content or duration. Existing literature review indicates that the characterization of ground motion for a generalized case has not been fully addressed. In this study, various parameters were derived for ground motions obtained from the PEER Ground Motion Database, employing a deterministic approach. Initially, an open-source software code called OpenSeismoMatlab is utilized to establish a reference for obtaining the parameters, addressing a primary concern. A total of 195 ground motions are analyzed, yielding parameters that may be categorized as Basic Indices, Peak Indices, Cumulative Indices, Mixed Indices, as well as spectral parameters obtained through Fourier spectra and Elastic spectra. The results provide insights into obtaining parameters directly for specific ground motions, offering a comprehensive understanding of their nature. This work concentrates on establishing a methodology for obtaining parameters applicable to generalized ground motion scenarios.
