Smart Piezoelectric Materials for Hard and Cartilage Tissue Repair and Reconstruction
摘要
Piezoelectricity is a property unique to certain classes of materials where mechanical strain can be converted to electrical potential and vice versa. The unique capabilities of piezoelectric materials offer significant potential in tissue engineering, specifically in bone and cartilage regeneration. That piezoelectric materials can convert mechanical input into electrical signals which provides a highly convenient and beneficial path to facilitate cell growth by influencing the existing signaling channels. The versatility of piezoelectric materials in creating scaffolds for tissue development and sensors for monitoring tissue regeneration is also invaluable. This chapter comprehensively explores the utilization of various piezoelectric materials, some important forth coming studies in both inorganic and organic materials, in the regeneration of bone and cartilage tissues.
