The mechanical models of 2-DOF and 4-DOF nonlinear journal bearing rotor systems are established for a lower level amplitude transverse vibration. A simple nonlinear journal bearing rotor system consists of a uniform shaft carrying a disk in its middle span. The shaft is supported by two journal bearings at both ends. The journal bearing is made up of a journal, bearing house and lubricant. For such simple journal bearing rotor system, the Reynolds equation (Reynolds, Philos Trans R Soc Lond 177:157–234, 1886) can be adopted.
