Hundred Years of Sociology in Karnataka: Growth Trajectory and Current Challenges
摘要
Sociology in India has traversed one hundred years, and just as we are celebrating this journey, new challenges are emerging for the discipline. This is the situation in Karnataka, one of the first states in the country, where sociology made its beginnings as early as in 1917. From falling enrolments to dwindling employment opportunities and questions being raised about its job relevance, sociology is facing a crisis situation in the state. There are serious gaps in the subject content, pedagogical practices, skills imparted and attempts at enhancing the employability of students. Also, the hurried imposition of NEP in the state without adequate preparation could not bring any meaningful change in the curriculum quality or in the teaching–learning practices. But all these challenges do not undermine the relevance of sociology to our times. The need of the day is to enhance the contemporaneity of the discipline and develop new skills in students which enhance their job prospects. The paper seeks to trace the shifts that have emerged in the growth path of the discipline, locate the gaps and identify the way forward.
