For the millennial jade culture tradition in central China, my book will adopt the term “Black Jade Age”, as based on historical documentations of the “black jade.” Since the middle and late Yangshao Culture, after a history of 1,500 years, the 4,000-year-old late Longshan Culture came to see the end of the Black Jade Age. Despite the black jade’s prevalence in ritual jades of Longshan Culture in the peripheral areas of central China, the tremolite jade was on the rise to eventually replace the earlier tradition of the serpentine jade. Based on extensive surveys, sampling, and other fieldwork, the previous chapter charted the distribution of prehistoric black jade in areas west of central China, encompassing the cultures of Yangshao, Longshan, and Qijia. These cultures, however, were different in their jade uses.

摘要
