Automated vehicles (AVs) are such machines. Undoubtedly, AVs have the potential to enhance road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and provide increased mobility for individuals who face challenges with traditional transportation methods. However, in ethical dilemmas and legal puzzles faced by AVs, envision a situation where an AV must decide whether to swerve, potentially endangering three pedestrians crossing the road or maintain its course, risking harm to a group of schoolchildren inside the vehicle. This scenario underscores the complex ethical and legal choices AVs must confront, involving the allocation of risk and harm among different stakeholders on the road. Car manufacturers, system designers, legislators, and law-enforcement authorities are currently grappling with these moral and legal dilemmas. Solutions to these moral and legal puzzles can hardly be a single and universal doctrine that is applicable to every culture and legal system.
