Implant Corrosion and Various Surface Modification Methods of Medical Devices

This chapter examines the critical issue of implant corrosion in medical devices and investigates various surface modification methods to mitigate this challenge. Implant corrosion may lead to adverse biological responses, device failure, and patient complications. The different surface modification techniques, including mechanical, chemical, and physical methods, are discussed. Mechanical methods, such as polishing and sandblasting, enhance the surface roughness. However, chemical methods, including sol-gel coatings and chemical vapor deposition, produce bioactive layers. Moreover, physical methods, including physical vapor deposition, ion implantation, and thermal spraying, offer a wide range of possibilities for improving implant biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. Thus, this chapter gives an overview of various coating techniques, comparing their characteristics and suitability for specific applications. A detailed understanding of these surface modification strategies will be important to advance the design and development of safe and effective medical implants.
