Neurogenic or neuropathic bladder refers to a dysfunction of the urinary bladder caused by a neurological disorder or damage to the nerves that control bladder function. It can result in problems with bladder storage or emptying, leading to issues such as urinary incontinence, urinary retention, or abnormal bladder contractions. It can adversely affect the function of the kidneys with serious consequences. The commonest cause of neurogenic bladder in children is spinal dysraphism. Urodynamic study helps to categorize the different types of bladder dysfunction and helps to identify the “unsafe” bladder needing special attention. CIC and pharmacotherapy are the cornerstone of management. Botulinium toxin injection has a short term effect. Bladder augmentation may be required in selected group of patients with high pressure, low compliant bladder to protect the function of the upper tracts.
