Meckel diverticulum is a vitello-intestinal duct remnant and a true diverticulum of the ileum. It commonly presents in young children, especially boys. The usual presentation is lower gastrointestinal bleeding due to heterotopic gastric mucosa, intestinal obstruction due to intussusception/band obstruction/volvulus, diverticulitis, and incidental finding during abdominal operations. Though radiological imaging and radionuclide scans can suggest the diagnosis, the definitive finding can be established by laparoscopy or laparotomy. For symptomatic patients, the safest and definitive treatment is resection of the Meckel diverticulum including its base to ensure removal of any heterotrophic tissue.
