Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is characterized by varying grades of intestinal injury due to multiple factors. Most babies can be managed conservatively and do not need surgical intervention. The decision to undertake surgery is best conducted through a MDT approach. Surgical treatment is guided by the extent and location of the bowel disease and the condition of the neonate. Outcome is variable and depends on the gestation and weight of the neonate and other co-morbidities.
