The construction industry is undeniably one of the major contributors to economic growth in any given country. For example, investments in large infrastructure projects create employment opportunities that stimulate the economy. As such, graduates of the construction economics field need to adapt quickly to the paradigm shift to ensure they can function effectively in today’s construction environment. The call for research and curriculum redesign in construction economics field to improve the efficiency of the industry is evident in past studies. Consequently, this study aims to conduct a review on the construction economics field with a view of revealing the area of focus of past studies and current trends. This study adopted a bibliometric approach, and data were gathered from the Scopus database. Keywords used to extract documents from the database were “construction economics” and “building economics.” VOSviewer was used to prepare a co-occurrence map based on the bibliographic data gathered. The findings revealed that construction economics researches are clustered into four clusters, namely the construction project economics, construction industry economics, economic theories, and project management. Currently, the research focus is primarily on economic development and its associated economic and social impacts. Research limitations/implications: The limitation of this study is the usage of a single database. Despite its limitations, a much-needed curriculum redesign in construction education can consider the identified trends from this study findings. The study adopted the bibliometric approach in mapping out research focus in construction economics field, an approach that has not been given considerable attention in the development of the construction economics as an academic field.
