The construction industry is undergoing a rapid digital transformation, with new disruptive technologies being increasingly adopted to improve efficiency, reduce errors, and enhance collaboration. This transformation aims to deliver Construction 4.0. However, is the existing skillset of construction professionals sufficient? Probably not. Therefore, construction professionals will need a strong foundation in digital skills to stay ahead of future technological advancements. Nevertheless, preparing students for the digital construction industry is a challenge for educators, as only the traditional pedagogical approaches may not be sufficient to teach digital skills effectively. This paper systematically reviews the literature on teaching digital skills to civil engineering and construction management students. Different pedagogical aids like online learning systems, simulation, augmented and virtual reality, building information modelling, and their prospective applications for teaching digital skills are reviewed. After that, recommendations such as teachers’ training, infrastructure improvement, and strategic policy development are provided to incorporate digital skills training in curricula.
