VR Game Development: Team-Building Exercises Gamified
摘要
In higher education, developing undergraduates’ teamwork skills is crucial due to the growing value of collaborative abilities in the workforce. Traditional group projects and presentations often fail to fully recognise individual contributions or engage all team members, potentially hindering the learning process. This project introduces a novel approach by creating a Virtual Reality (VR) team-building game using the Unity engine and C# scripting to leverage VR’s immersive nature for enhancing collaboration and communication among users. The game features three team-oriented challenges: a maze, a cipher sentence arrangement, and a riddle. One team member experiences the VR game while others use a game navigation manual to assist. In the maze level, team members guide the player through a maze within a time limit, fostering communication and trust. In the cipher level, the player arranges symbols into a sentence while the team deciphers and communicates the solution, promoting role assignment and composure under pressure. The riddle level requires teams to solve a challenging riddle together, enhancing trust, communication, and problem-solving skills. Testing with undergraduates demonstrated the game’s effectiveness in promoting teamwork, mirroring workplace scenarios where individuals must collaborate towards a shared goal. Participants showed increased comfort levels and improved communication and collaboration. Observational data confirmed the game’s positive impact on teamwork and connections among team members. The project faced limitations in cohesion and structure due to time constraints, but future enhancements include a scoring system, auto-generated questions to avoid repetitiveness, and additional levels to improve the overall gaming experience.
