This article outlines how “Chinese” culture has influenced other cultures as much as these other cultures have influenced China. It is argued that the porosity of cultural boundaries precisely is the prerequisite for cultural vitality, and that the current implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative—a network of infrastructure and communication channels—in this sense offers opportunities for a new Euro-Chinese dialogue and mutual understanding. This new dialogue, it is claimed, also offers opportunities for redressing the effects caused by nineteenth-century asymmetrical cosmopolitanism.
