Decentralised Recycling and Waste Management for Digital Circular Economy

This chapter focuses on decentralised recycling and waste management in a digital circular economy. It provides insight into the potentially valuable applications of blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and big data as solutions to the problem. This study assesses how decentralised systems mitigate the issues characteristic of linear waste management approaches, minimise environmental impact, and increase community participation. It also assesses the limitations many players have in facilitating technological advancement in waste management. The study is underpinned by two approaches: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and the Population, Interest, Context, Outcome (PICO) framework. This study conducted a systematic literature review based on the research questions and interests in the roles of digital technologies to compile the research findings concerning decentralised waste management using 32 sample studies. The PICO approach was used to identify the pragmatic reality and potential of the organisations, especially in South Asia's waste management sector and other emerging economies. The investigation reveals that decentralised recycling results in economic, environmental, and social benefits, including reduced transportation costs, increased community employment opportunities, decreased landfills, and increased community participation. However, some barriers include regulatory and policy issues, technologies, funding constraints, and cultural issues. Lastly, the study also shows that digital technologies can enhance waste management, tracking, monitoring, and sorting wildly, but this needs infrastructure and support to be effective.
