The Mahanadi River Basin is a peninsular basin that drains into the Bay of Bengal. It covers an area of 139681.51 sq. km and flows through the states of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. In the past 20 years, different environmental sectors of the basin have degraded because of rapid development in the area in terms of hydropower projects, road and railway projects, industrial projects, mining projects, and the expansion of cities. The geology, physiography, land use/land cover changes, water quality, and developmental activities in the Mahanadi basin, have been critically examined in this discussion. The different impacts likely to occur in the basin have been unveiled and measures required to ameliorate them to safeguard the ecosystem of the basin have been deciphered.
