Agriculture is the largest source of livelihood in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu falls in semi-arid to dry sub-humid climate. This geographical position supports higher crop productivity under irrigation. In Tamil Nadu, agriculture is undergoing perceptible changes as it gets transformed from traditional to modern economy which is an important step towards economic development. The traditional uncompromising practices followed since long time and the systematic method of cultivation impregnated with Good Agricultural Practices focusing on environment for production of food grains are needed in the modern agriculture. It is necessary to promote environment-friendly sustainable agriculture and encourage farmers to adopt practices blended with ITK to meet the demands put forth by the growing population in the food segment as well as the raw materials for agro-based industries in an eco-friendly sustainable way. Some of the ITKs with the benefits accrued are given in the chapter. For example, about 10 kg of groundnut cake is soaked overnight and in the next morning applied at 200 ml/plant gives more yields in flower crops. Application of tank silt at 100 t ha−1 with recommended dose of NPK fertilizers through fertigation is recommended for achieving more crop yield in coastal sandy soils. Planting of Vetiveria zizanioides at 10 m distance reduced the soil runoff loss by 23% and conserved 16% more moisture as well as facilitated higher sorghum crop yields in rainfed sloppy soils. Paired row maize intercropped with vegetable cowpea or black gram (2:2) was found beneficial compared to other intercropping systems. Farm mechanization; post-harvest management of crop produces, drought mitigating measures, soil reclamation, growing salt tolerant crop/varieties, adoption of suitable agronomic practices like broad bed furrow system, sowing in ridge/furrow system, micro irrigation, mixing of good quality water with poor quality water, alternate irrigation with good and poor quality water, gypsum bed technology for problem soil and water management, reclamation of degraded lands are need of the hour along with policy intervention for achieving sustainable crop production with conservation of natural resources.
