Blending Traditional Knowledge of Farmers in Agriculture with Modern Scientific Technologies in the State of Chhattisgarh

The traditional agricultural practices used by the farmers in Chhattisgarh have either been blended or are having prospects for blending with modern scientific techniques to minimize chemical inputs, improve soil health, reduce environmental degradation and give higher economic gains. Adopting integrated nutrient management through conjoint application of organic manures, biofertilizers, green manure, along with neem and karanj oil-coated urea is capable of checking the excessive use of chemical fertilizers by 25% to >50%. Inoculation of sugarcane sets with the Gluconacetobacter isolate Gaceto-k-74 can save up to 25% RDF of N. Replacement of traditional mixed cropping by intercropping like cowpea and horse gram intercropped with maize results in higher monetary advantage index and B:C ratio (>2.5). Cultivating low water requiring rabi chickpea on residual soil moisture in the rice-fallow fields by replacing long-duration rice variety with medium duration gives net returns worth more than Rs. 14,000 ha−1. The introduction of summer maize and finger millet under midland situations in place of summer rice may save 709 and 755 mm ha−1 of water, respectively. Higher economic gains can be obtained by marigold flower cultivation through the use of suitable varieties, proper planting density, and also obtaining additional income from selling marigold cuttings as planting material. Lining with stone/chips and providing vents inside the open dug wells enhance storage by about 25% and prevent their collapse. Also, lining of inlets to water harvesting ponds minimizes silting which otherwise requires de-silting at Rs. 50–60/m3 water storage. Compartmental bunding and vegetative/bio-fencing on main field bunds may minimize soil loss and graded channels may be made for controlled removal of runoff. Integrated vertical farming in water harvesting ponds, namely, rice + poultry may augment income. Replacement of summer rice crops with maize and finger millets may be done to save irrigation water. For controlling pest population in paddy, broadcasting of kodo followed by the insertion of karra plant twigs and one spraying of neem oil (0.5%) at 45 DAT may be useful. Similarly, mixing pulse seed with mahua and mustard oil, cow dung ash and fine sand effectively keeps the pulse beetle population in check.
