Blending Traditional Knowledge of Farmers in Agriculture with Modern Scientific Technologies in the Hills of Uttarakhand State

The Himalayan region farming communities have developed, evaluated, implemented and improved several traditional technologies through learning by doing their own experience. These technologies mostly have some scientific relevance. The improvement/modification of traditional technology is the only way to develop appropriate location-specific technology for very heterogeneous, diverse systems with variable climates and resources in the Himalayan region. Indigenous traditional knowledge (ITK) covers various aspects of agriculture and allied activities that have been included in this book chapter such as crop production, soil, water and nutrient management, plant protection and farm mechanization. The integrated nutrient management, water management, spring recharging, VL poly-cement tank, drip system for small terraces, method and time of sowing, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in plant protection using botanicals e.g., neem (bakain), etc., to control pest infestation, VL Sayhi Hal, paddy threshers and small tools are some cost-effective and locally adaptable technologies for farmers. Vermicompost promoted the growth of various crops by 50–100% over conventional compost and 30–40% over chemical fertilizers. Integrated use of NPK and FYM increased the yield of wheat by 197.9% and WUE by >200%. The indigenous measures of plant protection can control insect pests and diseases from 22 to 100%. The soybean seed treatment with Parthenium leaf extracts at 5% reduced the population of soybean-sucking bugs up to 76%. Inclusion of one legume crop in the monocropping system can save about 50–60 kg of N fertilizer, 20–45 kg of P fertilizer and 20 kg of K fertilizer/ha with saving of total cost of production by about Rs. 2000/ha. Adoption of improved low-cost farm tools, plough and low-energy threshers farmers may get 4–5 times monetary advantage apart from saving in time, labour and energy. Traditional agricultural practices can be used with modern techniques to promote sustainable farming practices and conserve natural resources which will certainly lead to the acceptability of technologies for sustainability of fragile mountain ecosystems and ensure livelihood security of the farmers.
